TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT
DEVELOPMENT COURSES
OVERVIEW
Cognadev’s development programmes represent a unique methodology, in that assessment results are used to guide the training and development process. These programmes are intended to benefit not only the individual, but also the organisation. The methodology capitalises on metacognitive guidance, self-generation of insights, Process Oriented Psychology (POP), group dynamics, job-related content, as well as behaviouristic principles. In addition to the obvious benefits usually associated with training, Cognadev’s development courses are unique in terms of their emphasis on the competency requirements of work, and the use of job related information for training purposes. This impacts directly on a person’s or team’s effectiveness.
Cognadev’s development programmes include a theoretical explanation of the cognitive and psychological constructs involved, structured guidelines for the development process, as well as exercises for the transfer and application of the newly acquired knowledge and skills within the work context. Follow-up assignments further ensure the internalisation and transfer of the skills.
The long term viability of an organisation is seriously hampered by the relatively short term vision characteristic of a tactical-operational orientation. This is often reflected by an emphasis on operational planning, budgeting, resource allocation and cost issues. While the above mentioned approach is very necessary, long term organisational viability requires a careful consideration of intangible, dynamic and interactive aspects. Traditional business courses at university, however, do not adequately prepare managerial and executive role players for this task.
SYSTEMS AND STRATEGIC THINKING
(3 FULL DAYS PLUS FOLLOW-UP ASSIGNMENTS USING JOB-RELATED INFORMATION)
This course aims at sensitising individuals to the importance of systems thinking, and to provide the necessary tools for such a process. The goal is for strategic initiatives to be optimised. The Systems and Strategic Thinking course aims to create metacognitive awareness of own thinking processes, to internalise criteria for appropriate contextualised thinking, and to establish effective habits for dealing with complexity (interactive, dynamic, intangible phenomena).
By the end of the course, individuals should have improved their ability to:
- Appreciate the complex nature of integrated, dynamic systems
- Deal with both detail complexity (a large number of variables) and dynamic complexity (taking into account the complex interplay and changing interrelationships among various elements)
- Show greater awareness of their own thinking processes as well as the ability to evaluate and adjust such processes to meet the demands of a complex situation
- Utilise the fundamentals of systems thinking to enhance their strategic thinking capabilities
ANALYTICAL THINKING
(2 FULL DAYS PLUS FOLLOW-UP ASSIGNMENTS USING JOB-RELATED INFORMATION)
A number of people show a predisposition for a “right brain”, integrative, intuitive, ideas-oriented and creative cognitive approach as opposed to a linear, detailed and precise management of information. In addition, an analytical orientation may also be hampered by emotional or motivational issues and inadequate learning opportunities. Individuals showing an impeded analytical orientation often find technical-specialist work and facts based thinking laborious and intimidating leading to demotivation and ineffectiveness.
The Analytical Thinking Skills course has been developed to optimise logical-analytical thinking, or the capacity to understand the whole by focusing on the properties of the parts. It involves the refinement of an individual's current cognitive skills, and the realisation of his/her potential for further intellectual growth and effectiveness.
By the end of the course, individuals should have improved their ability to:
- Work with detail in a precise manner
- Compare technical aspects
- Apply rules and think in a systematic, step-wise manner
- Differentiate between elements as well as link related elements
- Structure information into meaningful wholes
- Follow arguments through logically
- Integrate new information into existing frameworks
VALUES
(2 FULL DAYS PLUS FOLLOW-UP ASSIGNMENTS USING JOB-RELATED INFORMATION)
Organisational culture as well as team and individual effectiveness can largely be linked to the underlying value orientations of people. Cognadev’s course on value orientations is aimed at helping individuals to improve their understanding of their own and others’ world views, perspectives and personal motivation at all levels. The course enables awareness and understanding of diversity (including cultural diversity) within a
group or organisation.
By the end of the course, individuals should have improved their ability to:
- Understand their own view of the world and how it fits in with that of other people
- Improve the effectiveness of their interpersonal responses in culturally diverse environments
- Demonstrate greater self-awareness, personal flexibility and deliberate exercise of free will in forming opinions and responding emotionally
CREATIVITY
(2 FULL DAYS PLUS FOLLOW-UP ASSIGNMENTS USING JOB-RELATED INFORMATION)
The aim of this course is to effect an understanding of the concept creativity and the factors involved in creativity. The course also aims to facilitate the realisation of the person’s own creative energy.
By the end of the course, individuals should have improved their ability to:
- Understand and appreciate the nature of creativity
- Pinpoint own creative energies
- Recognise everyday opportunities for creative self-realisation
- Appreciate the creative potential of others
- Be familiar with techniques to stimulate creativity
- Apply a creative orientation within the work environment
EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
(2 FULL DAYS PLUS FOLLOW-UP ASSIGNMENTS USING JOB-RELATED INFORMATION)
Emotional intelligence is a crucial, albeit often neglected resource, determining life successes. In this course, the content is aimed at improving selfunderstanding, self-awareness, self-control, motivation, interpersonal awareness and insight, as well as the ability to deal with adversity.
By the end of the course, individuals should have improved their ability to:
- Unlock their self-awareness in terms of their own emotional world
- Generate self-motivation, emotional energy and ability to remain focused
- Manage their emotions
- Deal with adversity by turning it into opportunity
- Cultivate the ability to influence and energise others
- Manage potentially problematic interpersonal relationships

LEARNING ORIENTATION INDEX (LOI) TRAINING
LEARNING ORIENTATION INDEX (LOI) TRAINING (2 days)
(The LOI is a new product and not yet accredited by the HPCSA)
What is the LOI?
The Learning Orientation Index (LOI) is a computerised game that measures the way in which a person processes information. Unlike IQ tests that focus on “structural” factors and primarily measure already developed skills in specific content areas, the LOI carefully tracks processing at a micro level to indicate cognitive preferences, capabilities and learning potential. This provides useful guidelines for the purposes of career guidance, selection, placement and development. The LOI is specifically aimed at school- and university leavers. It is web-enabled, self-administered, and capitalises on computer technology to ensure interactive assessment (and a success experience for the individual). Furthermore, is fun to do, and provides different customised reports immediately after testing that address the specific purpose of assessment. Given the availability of internet connected computers, large numbers of subjects can be assessed simultaneously.
Description of the LOI course contents
This training workshop addresses
- The broader psychometric assessment and career guidance contexts from a holistic perspective
- The underlying theoretical models
- The nature and development of the LOI
- Cognitive constructs measured by the LOI
- Interpretation of, and feedback on LOI results
- Application of the results – given different assessment purposes
Key Objectives of the LOI training course
- To develop competence in understanding, interpreting and applying the LOI results in an informed and ethical manner
- To enhance the practitioner’s skill in integrating the LOI findings with additional information provided by the client or other assessment results
- To facilitate learning and personal development by contextualising the LOI results for purposes of career guidance and self-insight, as well as to explore opportunities for further growth
LOI Refresher training

Certification as a LOI practitioner is dependent on the participant’s success in a competency evaluation that will be completed at the end of the workshop.
VALUE ORIENTATIONS (VO) AND THE MOTIVATIONAL PROFILE (MP) TRAINING
(1 day per assessment instrument)
What are the VO and MP?
The VO is an online, self report questionnaire that describes the core value systems that influence and shape an individual’s worldview, belief systems, ways of thinking about things, and ways of adjusting to the world.
The MP is a web-based assessment that measures motivation across the contexts of “Life”, “Work” and “Relationships”. It provides a perspective on an individual’s unique way of relating to, and managing challenges and changes in his/her world. Constructs reported on are, amongst others: life scripts, shadow index, transitional indices, emotional intelligence, energy themes and personality dynamics.
